Development of Quantification Methods to Assess Effects of Advanced Communication Systems on Post-Accident Evacuation Time Estimates for Nuclear Facilities, EPRI ANT LR 2016-07

This study provided the basis for enhanced plant capabilities in the form of advanced warning systems, as a strategy to mitigate uncertainties associated with potential SMR accidents and emergency response.

This strategy was proposed in the NEI whitepaper titled “Proposed Methodology and Criteria for Establishing the Technical Basis for Small Modular Reactor Emergency Planning Zone”.

Specifically, the study develops a method to quantify the benefits of advanced warning systems, thereby allowing credit to be taken for their expected effect on evacuation efficiency.
